Soil & Water Resources Management for Combating Desertification in Drylands under Climate Change

I. Context

Under the global climate change context, combating desertification is remaining one of the most complex challenges with long-term social, economic and environmental implications. It is reported that about two billion people in the world depend on the fragile ecosystems in arid and semi-arid areas. Addressing this issue requires increased scientific research & development, global collaboration, and efficient sharing of technical solutions.

Under this framework, the Institute of Arid Regions (IRA-Médenine), University of Gabès, Tunisia, is organizing the international conference on “Soil & Water Resources Management for Combating Desertification in Drylands under Climate Change” (SWDCC 2022; www.swdcc2022.com ) from 15 June to 17 June, 2022 in Djerba Island, Tunisia. The SWDCC 2022 is committed to promote the major themes of soil and water resources assessment and management and the related challenges due to the degradation processes exacerbated by the impact of climate change. It will serve as a platform to encourage collaboration and exchange of information, ideas and experience among environmentalists and professionals in related disciplines with particular interests in combating desertification.

The primary objective of the special issue is to share and spread the knowledge in the field of combating desertification under climate change context in arid and semi-arid areas around the world.

II. Topics

The topics of the special issue include but are not limited to the following:

(1) Climate change: vulnerability and adaptation in drylands

(2) Water resources mobilization and management

(3) Soil degradation and conservation

(4) Environmental monitoring and assessment in drylands

III. About the Journal of Arid Land

The Journal of Arid Land is an international peer-reviewed journal co-sponsored by Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Science Press and China Society of Natural Resources.

The journal covers such topics as the dynamics of natural resources (including water, soil and land, organism and climate), the security and sustainable development of natural resources, and the environment and the ecology in arid and semi-arid areas, especially in Central Asia. Coverage extends to interactions among the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere, and relationships between these natural processes and human activities. The journal also discusses the patterns of geography, ecology and environment; ecological improvement and environmental protection; and regional responses and feedback mechanisms to global change.
